A platíca con Mireya Navarro, Editor-in-Chief of Brennan en Español.

For anyone who knows me, you might also know that the National Association of Hispanic Journalists has been a catalyst to my newsroom career and a source of professional pride and growth in so many ways. I've always tried to make it a point to attend the group's annual convention, which has led me to cities around the country and given me hours of professional development and newsroom contacts. I attended my first conference as a senior in college in 1984 in Tucson. It's been a great ride ever since.
This year's gathering was in Chicago, the second time NAHJ has met there. I attended with an additional goal in mind -- I wanted to get to know some of my fellow NAHJers on a deeper level. Yes, I wanted to find out their current passions and projects. But I also wanted to dig a little bit more to see if I could find out what makes them tick. Why did they become journalists, how did their upbringing lead them to take up this demanding and critical profession.
While my platícas didn't always get to their full life stories, I did learn much about my colleagues and gained greater insight into their day-to-day work, accomplishments and passions.
