Gilbert Bailón, Executive Editor of Chicago Public Media

Gilbert Bailón has been an important member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Association for decades now. The NAHJ Hall of Fame member and former NAHJ president has had a stellar journalism career that started in daily newspapers in the 1980s and has now moved to public media.

He made a name for himself at the Dallas Morning News, where worked his way up to Executive Editor, a role he also held at the St. Louis Post Dispatch. It was there his team won awards for its coverage of the Ferguson revolt in the wake of the Michael Brown police shooting.

He’s since served as the executive editor at KERA, the Dallas public radio station, and now as Executive Editor of News Platforms at Chicago Public Media, a collaborative approach to journalism that includes the city’s WBEZ public radio station and the Chicago Sun Times.

At the NAHJ annual convention in Chicago in July, we talked with Bailón about his transition to public media, his 40-year newspaper industry career, the current state of journalism, and some of his early life experiences that led to his chosen career.
