Award-winning journalist Susan Carroll stories exemplified the role of the media in a well-functioning democracy. Whether it was exposing wrongs, bringing to light dangerous trends that in some cases led to regulatory change, or humanizing her subjects in a way that dignified their suffering, she earned the respect of colleagues and the public.

Several past co-workers and colleagues, including her city editor at her first post-college newsroom job, a fellow immigration reporter at the Arizona Republic, and the executive director of the Investigative Reporters and Editors organization, recall her writing and reporting gifts.

Following her death in May 2024 by suicide, her legacy led to the establishment of an IRE fellowship in her name that will give other journalists a chance to hone their craft at future IRE conferences and trainings.
